OnePlus is known for offering a premium flagship experience on a budget, and the company has big plans in the foldable smartphone space, too. Its first folding phone is likely to be called OnePlus Open, and it has been subjected to some rigorous durability tests recently. It has managed to impress the testers with its strength and performance. If these reports are accurate, the OnePlus Open might be more durable than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is currently available.
The OnePlus Open is rumored to come with a 7.8-inch 2K OLED foldable display and a 6.3-inch cover screen. Both of the screens are expected to have 120Hz refresh rates. The OLED display will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is said to be paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage for the base model. A 4,800 mAh battery is also rumored to be included, which should offer a good amount of power for multitasking and long usage periods.
A new leak has pointed out that the OnePlus Open will have an improved hinge design, which is expected to offer better durability than the current one on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This change is thanks to the inclusion of two additional hinges on the OnePlus Open’s inner frame. The extra hinges will help reduce the stress on the outer shell when it is opened and closed.
According to the source, OnePlus’s initial testing of the OnePlus Open found that it could fold and unfold the device 400,000 times without damaging it. That number is much higher than the 100,000 the Oppo Find N2 reportedly achieved. This result should be good news for OnePlus fans who want a sturdy foldable that can easily take on everyday tasks and even replace laptops.
A few book-style foldables are currently in the market, including the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 from Samsung, the HONOR Magic Vs from HONOR, and the Huawei Mate X from Huawei. OnePlus is expected to join this foldable smartphone race later this year, and its OnePlus Open should be a direct competitor to the likes of Samsung and Huawei.
A launch date for the OnePlus Open is yet to be announced, but it is expected to be unveiled at an event in New York City on August 29. An earlier rumor pointed to the OnePlus Open launching on August 26, but this has now been pushed back to later this month. The delay is allegedly because OnePlus has moved away from BOE’s foldable display panels and will now use those from Samsung, which has more experience with this display technology. This change should not affect the overall specifications of the OnePlus Open, though.
