For any woodworker who wants to enhance the durability of their bench-top, adding some C Channels can work the magic. These little guys offer additional support to your wooden tables, ensuring they stay flat, strong, and sturdy for years to come.
Not only does a C Channel help prevent warping and sagging, it also contributes to a clean, professional look. But not many people understand the correct process of installing a C Channel on their bench-top.
If this category clearly depicts you, then you’re just at the right place. Before commencing on the installation process, you need to have the correct tools and materials on the ready. You need a C Channel, marking and measuring equipment, straight edge or guide rail, router and router bits, drill and drill bits, inserts and bolts, and PPE/safety gear.
With your tools and materials on the ready, it is time to prepare your C Channel. You can always choose a C Channel from the available pre-cut range at most dealers. If it doesn’t fit, use a metal saw or angle grinder to cut to desired size. Once cut to size, lightly sand the edges to remove any sharp corners, allowing for a safe handling experience.
Now you need to mark the desired placement of the C Channel on your project. For this, you need a square to ensure your line are straight and true. If cutting your C Channels to customized length, label the channels with numbers to keep track of your markings.
If having a router track set-up, use it to guide your route. Alternatively, a straight edge and some clamps will also suffice. Next, set up stop blocks to help you know when to start and stop routing. This step ensures you have uniform cuts throughout the process.
To prolong the lifespan of your router bit, it’s ideal to make multiple small passes as opposed to trying to cut everything in one go. If looking for a flush finish, rout out the centre to accommodate the thickness of the C Channel. Ensure that the C Channel is flush with or slightly under the flat surface of the project.
Remember to clean up debris as you go. Keeping your workspace clean not only makes it easier to see your work but also helps maintain a safe environment. After routing the channel, mark out the holes for the inserts and bolts.
